Does mycophenolate mofetil increase the risk of cytomegalovirus infection in solid organ transplant recipients?: A mini-review BJID
Song,Alice Tung Wan; Abdala,Edson; Bonazzi,Patrícia Rodrigues; Bacchella,Telésforo; Machado,Marcel Cerqueira César.
Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is currently used for prophylaxis of acute rejection in solid organ transplantation. There have been diverging reports regarding an association between MMF and the risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. We reviewed the main published studies in an attempt to clarify the association between the use of MMF and the risk, frequency and severity of CMV infections. In a search of the Medline database with the terms "mycophenolate" and "cytomegalovir*", 42 articles were found to be relevant; among these, 29 articles were thoroughly analyzed. The first studies on MMF in renal transplantation already showed a tendency towards an association between this drug and the occurrence of CMV disease. Further studies were designed specifically...

Enterococcus faecalis resistant to vancomycin and teicoplanin (VanA phenotype) isolated from a bone marrow transplanted patient in Brazil BJID
Cereda,Rosangela F.; Sader,Helio S.; Jones,Ronald N.; Sejas,Lilian; Machado,Antônia M.; Zanatta,Yara P.; Rego,Sinaida T. M. S.; Medeiros,Eduardo A. S..
We report for the first time in Brazil, a patient from whom an Enterococcus faecalis VanA phenotype was isolated. Glycopeptide resistance is not commonly observed in Enterococcus faecalis, so this finding is of great concern since this species is responsible for 90% of enterococcal infections in Brazil. The isolate was recovered from a surveillance rectal swab culture from a patient with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Identification to the species level was performed by conventional biochemical tests and Vitek GPI cards. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was evaluated by use of broth microdilution and Etest (AB BIODISK, Solna, Sweden) methods. The isolate was identified as E. faecalis and was considered resistant to both vancomycin (MIC, > 256...

Evaluation of Crop Setting Systems for Four Summer Squash Varieties Cucurbita maxima (Carr.) Millán var. zapallito Agricultura Técnica
De Grazia,Javier; Tittonell,Pablo Adrián; Salvador Perniola,Omar; Caruso,Ariel; Chiesa,Angel.
The advantages of transplanting with respect to direct sowing has been widely reported in several vegetable species, but there are few studies in Cucurbits, and even fewer in summer squash (Cucurbita maxima (Carr.) Millán var. zapallito). Morphological and physiological characteristics of hybrid varieties determine earliness of between 5 to 10 days compared to traditional cultivars. The aim of the study was to compare the summer squash setting systems, direct sowing and nursery seedlings, and to determine their effect on yield and earliness in different genotypes. The hybrid varieties F1 Angelo and Espejo, and the standard varieties Any and Any Plus were used combined with two setting systems (direct sowing and nursery seedlings). Male and female flowering...

Le mercure, le cadmium et le plomb dans les eaux littorales libanaises: apports et suivi au moyen de bioindicateurs quantitatifs (éponges, bivalves et gastéropodes) ArchiMer
Nakhle, Khaled.
In 1975, the meeting for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea in Barcelona fixed several important objectives. One of them was the creation of National Observation Programs in order to evaluate the levels and tendencies of pollutants. Furthermore the MED-POL program has re-evaluated and developed these objectives. Lebanon has signed the Barcelona Convention and has been engaged in providing data about its coastal water quality. Unfortunately the Lebanese war, which also began in 1975, paralyzed the country for 15 years. Since 1990, successive governments in the country have fixed as an objective the reconstruction of the tourism sector. As a consequence, they became interested in the environmental problems. The studies carried out before or during the...

Limbal autograft transplantation in a dog with alkali-induced ulceration Ciência Rural
Brito,Fábio Luiz da Cunha; Cunha,Olicies da; Laus,José Luiz.
A case of a 3-month-old female mongrel dog with a history of apathy and previous contact with an alkaline (sodium hydroxide) is reported. The dog was reluctant to open the right eye. Ophthalmic examination revealed blepharospasm, photophobia, epiphora, discrete chemosis, conjunctival hyperemia, and diffuse corneal edema involving the limbus. The fluorescein test was positive and the result of the Schirmer tear test was 32mm min-1. On the basis of these findings the diagnosis was alkali-induced ulceration and limbal autograft transplantation was performed. Corneal vascularization was observed by the third postoperative day, with intensification in vessel number and caliber on subsequent days and small areas of corneal transparency. The present results show...

Targeted preemptive therapy according to perceived risk of CMV infection after kidney transplantation BJID
Pinto,Cahue Henrique; Tedesco-Silva Jr,Helio; Felipe,Claudia Rosso; Ferreira,Alexandra Nicolau; Cristelli,Marina; Viana,Laila Almeida; Aguiar,Wilson; Medina-Pestana,José.
ABSTRACT Background: The identification of the best strategy to manage cytomegalovirus infection is hampered by uncertainties regarding the risk/benefit ratios of universal prophylaxis versus preemptive therapy, the impact of indirect cytomegalovirus effects and the associated costs. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of targeted preemptive therapy according to perceived risk of cytomegalovirus infection after kidney transplantation. Methods: 144 adult kidney transplant recipients were enrolled in this 12-month study. None received cytomegalovirus pharmacological prophylaxis. Only high risk patients (positive donor/negative recipient (D+/R−), use of induction therapy with antithymocyte globulin, treatment of rejection) received preemptive...
